SCIATICA PAIN
By Rosemary Skinner
Returning by air from a recent holiday I suddenly experienced a sharp severe pain. A pain in the butt as you Americans would say. Spreading from my back then down to the buttocks, the back of the thigh and the outside and front of the leg.
Moment of reflection. My first thought was had the seat broken? Was I having a nightmare? Was the wine a bad vintage? Glancing around the cabin I noticed that everything was normal. In a flash it registered. Sciatica!
Most times, Sciatica is due to increased pressure on the nerve roots that extend from the lower part of the spinal cord which makes up the sciatic nerve. This can occur as a result of heavy lifting, repetitive movements, poor posture or other injury. More severe forms are caused by a protruding or prolapsed intervertebrai disc (slipped disc) pressing on the nerve roots. Sitting in an aircraft seat, inactive for several hours is a common cause.
Sciatica usually affects adults under the age of 60. Pain may come on very suddenly and be so severe that the person my be locked in one position
Treatment ranges from pain killers or anti-arthritic preparations to Physiotherapy and Magnet Therapy.
Magnet Therapy. Treat the spine with a magnetic back support. Small neodymium magnets placed over the site of pain are also effective. In order to gain maximum benefit I recommend using “D-max neodymium” magnets at night placed over the affected area. I used a “Serenity” magnetic overlay in addition.
