HAIR LOSS IN WOMEN

By Rosemary Skinner SRN

Have you ever wondered why we haven’t seen bald women detectives on television? Does this mean that women do not suffer serious hair loss? All women in common with men lose hair on a daily basis. How much is lost tells us if we are going bald or not. Normally 100 to 130 hairs lost per day is normal. This amount is replaced every day. Any more than this and you are going bald. This invariably happens after menopause.

In general there are two types of hair loss, anagen and telogen effluvium. The latter is commonly caused by Hormonal changes, medications, thyroid abnormalities, and stress. Anagen effluvium is mostly caused by chemotherapy preparations that poison the hair follicles. Temporary hair loss can be caused by poor diet, fungal infections, and medications. Women who feel they are losing their hair should seek medical advice. Currently there is only one applied medication that works (Minoxidil).

A consultant dermatologist should be able to advise on where to seek specialized hairdressers, hair replacement surgery, and counseling.

The alternative. A varied and nutritional balanced diet will help; taking note that only recommended amounts of Vitamin A should be taken. Maintain a recommended protein level in the diet. Using a magnetic hair brush is very beneficial, firstly it stimulates blood flow in the scalp and also by brushing your hair you can see and recognize fungal infections far quicker. Maintaining fluid levels is important. I suggest one glass (250ml) of magnetic water three times a day.
