WOMAN'S PROBLEMS

By Rosemary Skinner S.R.N.

Of all the problems associated with women’s health. Pre- Menstrual Tension (PMT) must be the most misunderstood problem by both women and their partners. Part of the Pre-Menstrual Syndrome, PMT is a natural occurrence. Almost half of all women of childbearing age will suffer varying degrees of discomfort. Symptoms can include irritability, nervousness, headaches, severe mood swings and depression. Lasting for 5 to 10 days the problem can be severe. The causes of PMT are unknown. Although theories abound as regards causes, it has been suggested that fluctuating levels of Serotonin caused by hormonal changes are the problem. I would urge all women suffering acute discomfort should consult their medical practitioner

Conventional treatment consists of treating the symptoms, analgesics (pain killers), anti-arthritic preparations (reducing pain and inflammation), and mild anti-depressants.

The alternative. Often neglected, exercise would be my first recommendation. Exercise releases tension and pent up anxiety. Exercise improves blood circulation and increases the level of endorphins in the body. Evening Primrose oil can be very useful, taken in conjunction with vitamin B6.
