PMT (Pre-Menstrual Tension) By Rosemary Skinner SRN
PMT is part of a group of emotional and physical symptoms that plagues over half of western women, part of a group of problems called Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
A high proportion of women suffer from some form of Pre-Menstrual Tension generally within 7 to 14 days before menstruation. The symptoms can be severe as menstruation approaches. Usually these symptoms subside on the onset or after a few days later. PMT is one of the most misunderstood problems affecting women in their 20s 30s which disappears at the menopause time. The cause of PMT is not fully understood. It is a condition, which leaves most women feeling out of sorts and vulnerable. The Symptoms are as follows.
Bloating Cramps Anxiety Backache, Breast Tenderness Headache Food cravings. Depression Mood Swings
There is often a range of emotional changes, which can be difficult to deal with. Hormonal changes may also be a significant factor because symptoms begin during the second part of the menstrual cycle, after ovulation takes place. The hormone estrogen rises during the first part of the cycle, falls at ovulation and rises again after ovulation to produce a hormone called progesterone. The levels of progerstone are at there lowest levels before a period. Hormone changes during the menstrual cycle have been blamed for causing PMT. Progesterone can also cause water retention. There is also evidence to suggest that when estrogen levels fall serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter, also drops,
Conventional Treatment Can consist of anti anxiety and depression medication. Muscle relaxants, painkillers, oral contraceptive, and diuretics
The Alternative Evening primrose oil capsules and starflower oil capsules have been effective for many women or a combination of B6 and oil of evening primrose. Increased intake of vitamin A and E and Calcium supplements are also beneficial.
Diet—certain foods can aggravate the symptoms-for example-chocolate caffeine and sugar. Exercise is very important to relieve stress. Meditation and yoga are also of benefit. Painful cramps –headaches-backaches can be treated with Magnetic Therapy. Further details of treatment using Magnets read my book. Magnet Therapy – A Powerful Healing Force-
I always suggest that any women with severe discomfort from PMT should consult their family Doctor initially and progressing to a Consultant Gynecologist if necessary. Do not suffer in silence!
