Parkinsonism

Some doctors make a distinction between Parkinson’s disease which is defined as a degenerative disorder associated with ageing and Parkinsonism due to other causes-the long term use of antipsychotic drugs can be a cause.

SYMPTOMS INCLUDE ( both Parkinson’s and Parkinsonism)

1)       tremors especially in the hands

2)       rigidity especially in the facial muscles

3)       lack of “natural” reactive movement

4)       Stooping posture

5)       Very limited walking movement

DESCRIPTION
Clinically defined as- tremor, rigidity and very poor spontaneous movement, expressionless face, unmodulated voice, increasing tendency to stoop, shuffling walk

Causes
It is a disease process affecting the basal ganglia of the brain and associated with a deficiency of dopamine – a neurotransmitter. It is the loss of those cells that produce dopamine that causes the problem. It is thought that symptoms appear when 80% of these cells are lost. The long term use of antipsychotic drugs can be a cause of “Parkinsonism”

SOLUTIONS
The earlier diagnosis is made the better; as with all health care problems, it is better the devil you know than trying to deal with unknown. While we have to accept that some people seem to attach some sort of stigma to any illness that reduces a patient’s ability to cope with normal life, it is still better to know what you are dealing with.

Chemically a lot can be done to relieve symptoms, especially in the early stages. The aim is to replace the missing dopamine in the brain. However, there can be severe side-effects with prolonged usage of these chemicals. Because of these problems, doctors usually try to use other drugs that boost dopamine activity or mimic its effects, known as dopamine agonists. These drugs also have side-effects and doses have to be carefully tailored to each patient’s needs. Some foods, such as oysters are claimed to be very rich in Dopamine. Exercise is known to release dopamine in the brain    Anecdotal evidence, collected empirically over a long period, suggests that the use of Magnetic Therapy™ can be very beneficial. This is probably due to the generally uplifting benefits of improved circulation of blood and energy. The high quality Active Magnetic Chain Bracelets are an excellent way to achieve this. Use of the serenity magnetic overlay, to keep all the Circulation going while asleep. Exercise is known to help all similar conditions and much of the benefit from exercise is due to improved circulation.

Taking up yoga, even at an advanced age, will also help. The posture correcting exercises, with the increased flexibility will aid the magnetic influences.

Tourettes syndrome
This is another condition associated with abnormal processing of dopamine.

CONCLUSIONS
Whilst there is not a known “cure” for this problem, there is much that can be done to alleviate the early symptoms. Getting early diagnosis is essential. Magnetic Therapy can help especially if used as a preventive measure.
