FINGER PAIN By Peter Rose FSI
Contents include. Finger Injury, Arthritis, and Carpal Tunnel Problems.
Our fingers are probably the most used part of our anatomy; they may not be in constant use, as the heart and lungs are but just about all practical activities involve the use of fingers. Injury and pain in the fingers disrupts our lives, I am including the thumbs in this. We even use fingers and hands as part of our speech.
Injury and dislocation
SYMPTOMS 1) Sudden sharp and severe pain 2) Swelling and tenderness 3) Reduced ability to move the fingers. 4) In cases where the bone is cracked without the bone parts becoming separated or dislocated from each other, the pain and swelling may not be immediate
DESCRIPTION Generally if a bone is broken “completely” you will know exactly when and how it occurred. The pain is sudden and severe with loss of mobility and swelling. Damage such as a crack to the bone may not be so obvious and can be confused with bruising to the same area of the hand. Dislocation of the finger joint will also produce pain and swelling, with loss of use.
SOLUTIONS Apply cold and restrict movement Take rescue remedy for the shock Use arnica 30 for the bruising that will occur Obtain X ray and scans to determine the extend of the damage AFTER ensuring the bones are in the correct position, bind the damaged finger to the one next to it to prevent further damage Wrist Support BBP- 19 Magnetic Wrist/Thumb Wraps BBP-18 Magnetic Premier Chain Bracelet (These are very strong) Magnetic Rings These do appear to help many people. Medication for pain and inflammation
Arthritis
SYMPTOMS 1) Gradual increase in pain when try to flex the fingers 2) Swellings around the knuckle joints 3) Pain with loss of flexibility and strength
DESCRIPTION Arthritis being a generic name for any condition that has pain associated with inflammation and a joint. Some advocate that our diet can affect arthritis but when it is causing pain and loss of flexibility in the hands it may be a bit too late to try and change the cause.
SOLUTIONS Get blood tests, scans and expert diagnosis Use of “TENS” machine to control pain Diet cutting out stimulants and increasing “fish oils” Glucasomine Acupuncture to relieve immediate pain Wrist Support BBP- 19 Magnetic Wrist/Thumb Wraps BBP-18 Magnetic Premier Chain Bracelet (These are very strong) Magnetic Rings These do appear to help many people.
Carpel Tunnel
SYMPTOMS 1) Numbness 2) Tingling sensation 3) Restriction in use on thumb side of hand 4) Pain (Often acute)
DESCRIPTION The carpel tunnel is a small space in front of the wrist, it is bounded by ligaments and the tendons and nerves that flex the fingers pass through this space. Part of the covering for this space is the flexor retinaculum and this makes a strong covering. This strength, combined with the very restricted space, means that any swelling tends to compress the nerves which pass through the area. It is a condition that may be a form of Repetitive Strain Injury but it can occur without apparent cause. Pregnant women can have the condition
SOLUTIONS In extreme cases surgery is required to relive the pressure on the nerves . Scans to determine the exact nature and extent of the problem. Carpal Tunnel Support BCT-1
CONCLUSIONS We should take more care of our hands than we do. Fingers are very vulnerable to injury, whether we are taking part on contact sports or simply carrying out domestic duties, injuries to fingers are the most common cause of visits to the accident ward of hospitals. Many modern occupations require constant repetition of finger movements, other occupations, such as car mechanics, place fingers at risk of being squashed. Take care it is far better to avoid the injury. If you have suffered finger injuries in the past then remember the repaired area will be weaker than the original, wear gloves in the cold, keep support wraps to use at first sign of pain etc
