KNEE PAIN
By Peter Rose FSI
Contents Include.
Injury, Dislocation of knee cap, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Housemaids knee.
The knees are a flexible connection between the main bones of the leg. The need to provide both movement and strength give considerable design problems. Pain in the knees, structural weakness and pain when bending knees are all common problems.

Injury
There are a lot of possible injury problems with knees, from dislocated knee cap to torn cartilages
.
Symptoms include:

Pain on inside of knee during and after movement—see A below

Locking of knee so not being able to flex the knee—see A and B below

Swelling on the inside of the knee which may be worse after exercise  --- see A  and B below

Description
A -- This can be due to torn “meniscus” which are the cartilages which fill the space between the Femur –
Thigh bone and the Tibular – shin bone.
The Fibular – split bone- is joined to the Tibular just below the knee.

B—This can be caused by damage to the cartilages and tendons that hold the structure together, the damage making movement painful.

SOLUTIONS:
Rest with leg supported on cushions in a way that allows the knee to be comfortable
Short term pain killers and anti inflammatory medications

Obtain scans to check the extent of the damage try the Magnetic Knee Support Open Patella BBP 23
As recovery continues you can use
Magnetic Sports Knee Support  BBP 38

In place of the full knee support. The damaged area will be weaker than the original tissue and so it would be wise to use the sports support for all sports or vigorous activity at any time after recovery from the original injury
In cases of badly torn cartilage you may need surgery.

Dislocated or damaged knee cap-Patella
Symptoms include:
Pain with a lack of stability, falling down, particularly pain in the front of the knee.
The bony front of the knee moves abnormally when touched.
Pain when try to move.

Description

The patella is a saucer shaped hard structure that acts as a shield to the actual knee joint. It is held in place by fibrous material that can get over stretched, torn  and damaged.
SOLUTIONS
Obtain X rays and scans to determine the extent of the damage, Have the area checked to ensure no chips of broken bone to get lodged in the delicate joint structure.
Surgery  Short term pain killers and rest try the

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Symptoms include: Pain especially when attempting to move from stationary.
Pain and restricted movement that never seems to go away.

Description

A form of arthritis that involves the joints arthritis being
a generic name for any condition that has pain associated with inflammation and a joint.  We should also mention a “Bakers cyst”; which is a squashy lump at the back of the knee. These are common in joint disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, mostly painless and they disappear after a few months but they can rupture and cause pain and swelling in the lower leg. Consult your doctor

SOLUTIONS:
Blood tests and X ray examination to confirm the condition.
Anti inflammatory analgesics

Housemaid’s Knee
Symptoms include:
Pain especially when kneeling.
Swelling around especially at the front below the knee.

Description.
This is a version of Bursitis, where the container of fluid that is supposed to protect the knee cap becomes damaged and swells usually from frequent kneeling, a form of repetitive strain injury
CONCLUSION.
The knees take a tremendous load and have to multi-task all the time, sports activities add to the load and even driving a car place the knees under constant activity so it is no wonder they get worn and damaged. Magnetic therapy can reduce the damage and speed recovery.      Mention must be made of a very rare- about one in a million-condition that involves pain in or just above the knee. This is a type of bone cancer-osteogenic sarcoma, this pain occurs without obvious reason and affects mostly young adults, at this stage there are few other symptoms although later the patient develops symptoms similar to pneumonia. If there is an unexplained pain above or in the knee it should be expertly reviewed to eliminate this remote possibility.
